Learn why an attacker may see a stun gun as a challenge rather than a threat. How long does it really take for a stun gun to stop an attacker? What would you do if you got zapped, and what would an attacker do? We will also look at what happens to someone who is being zapped with a stun gun.
If you manage to touch an attacker with the two probes that release the electric shock. The stun gun will probably give an attacker a bit of a shock... duh! It will then piss him off! He will quickly learn that the thing you are pointing at him hurts if it touches him. So he won't let you touch him with it again.
You need to realize that he is attacking you because he thinks you are an easy target… a target that is unlikely to hurt him. He will probably see the stun gun as a toy. In my opinion, it will just make the attack a bit more fun and slightly more challenging for him.
Why?
Because anyone who points a stun gun at an attacker is saying, "I am scared of you!" The attacker then knows for sure that he has chosen a good victim. He knows (probably through years of bullying) that a person full of fear is easier to control.
An important point
You are probably thinking that if you zap an attacker with your trusty stun gun, he will instantly drop to the ground in paralyzing pain. So who cares if you're scared!
Well, think about this…
The people who sell stun guns are doing the right thing when they tell you that a one second zap will be just that, a zap. The honest people who sell stun guns, will then go on to say that it may take 3 to 5 seconds or more, depending on the situation, before an attacker will drop to the ground.
Now, what would YOU do if someone zapped you with a stun gun? Would you stand there and patiently wait five seconds for it to do its job. Or would you move it or yourself away? An attacker would probably grab it or the hand that holds it (gain control of the weapon), then take it off you and use it on you (I would).
Another way to look at it is like this: If you touch a red-hot stove, will you leave your finger on it for five seconds? Of course not! To grasp just how long five seconds is, count to five now:
One cat and dog, two cat and dog, three cat and dog, four cat and dog, five cat and dog.
Five seconds is a long time!
What happens to an attacker during a five-second zap
If you have ever done any aerobic exercise, you will probably know that aerobic means "with oxygen." You may also know that the next intensity above aerobic is anaerobic exercise (without oxygen). It is this anaerobic level of intensity that the muscles of a person being zapped with a stun gun, will work at.
Muscles will only work at an anaerobic level for three to five seconds before they are starved of the oxygen they need to keep working. They are working too fast for the oxygen supply to keep up with. With training, and a lot of it, muscles can work for longer at an anaerobic level, but not much longer (2 or 3 seconds).
Once an anaerobic threshold is reached, the muscles will stop working properly and that is when an attacker will drop to the ground, due to loss of muscle control and balance.
It is well-known that fit people recover quicker than unfit people (get their breath back and physically ready to go again). So the recovery time for a stunned attacker will be different from one person to another. It could be anywhere from three minutes, to thirty minutes.
Conclusion
It is important to realize that a stun gun may just piss an attacker off, and he may take it and used it on you. Remember that it can take five seconds or more for a stun gun to do its job. If it does do its job, the person being zapped will lose muscle control and balance, then drop to the ground.
