We will look at how to measure the heat in capsaicin, and which is the hottest? Is stronger pepper spray better, and which works best? How hot pepper spray works to make an attacker defenseless.
OC is short for "Oleoresin Capsicum." OC is taken from chili and mixed with oil. They are both placed in an aerosol can (the same idea as aerosol fly spray cans).
As you probably know, chili is HOT stuff. If you cook and put chili in the food you are cooking, you will probably know not to rub or touch your eyes after cutting and handling chili. Or, you have been introduced to it somewhere, some how, so you know just how hot it can be.
When eaten, the really hot chilies will cause your eyes to water, nose to run, lips, tongue and mouth to burn, and your body may break out into a sweet… great stuff!
Measuring the heat in capsaicin
Willbur Scoville, a pharmacologist, came up with a way of rating the power of capsaicin. It's called: The Scoville Heat Units Scale (SHU). Capsaicin is the hottest part of a chili. It is the part that is extracted to make hot pepper spray, and what the SHU measures.
If you would like to see exactly which part of chili capsaicin is extracted from, here's a photo:

As you would have seen in the scale, Orange Habanero chilies are the hottest, and therefore… if you get a can of hot pepper spray, get one made with Habanero chilies.
If you have eaten chili, you have experienced, in a small way, what it would be like to have it sprayed on your face and in your eyes.
Is stronger better
Pepper spray can be bought with 2 percent and up to 15 percent capsaicin content. The question is, is more better?
Imagine a thick blob of grease in a rice strainer. It just sits there and does not go through the strainer. Now imagine sawing machine oil being pored into a rice strainer. It goes straight through, right? Unlike the thick grease, it is thin, almost watery.
Now imagine the 15% pepper spray on an attacker's face as being like a thick blob of grease. It will work, but most of it will stay on his face and not soak through the eyelids and into the eyes. Being thick also means that it will take longer to start working.
So thin is better for pepper spray… between 2 and 5% and no more than 10%.
How hot pepper Spray Works
The first way pepper spray works, is of course with the use of heat, and lots of it.
If an attacker suddenly experiences a burning feeling in his eyes, HE may be the one who panics and goes to pieces. It would have been his plan to make YOU panic and go to pieces to make the attack easier for him.
He, suddenly becomes the defenseless victim. Powerless, due to loss of eyesight, and to a certain extent, he will lose control of himself. This is something he may have never experienced before.
When the spray takes affect, it will install a fear of the unknown and "what's going to happen to me" kind of thoughts: Do my eyes still work? Is the burning sensation getting worse? What happened to the person I was attacking and what else will they do to me etc.?
Think about it! How would you react and what would you be thinking if you got sprayed in your eyes with pepper spray?
Conclusion
Orange Habanero chilies are the hottest, so if you get a can of hot pepper spray, get one made from Habanero chilies. A thin pepper spray solution will work quicker, so get between 2 and 5% and no more than 10% capsaicin content. A spray in the face can throw your mind and body into chaos!
