Learn about expandable batons, stun batons, and side-handle batons. Expandable batons information on areas to strike the body and techniques for doing so. Why you should not get a baton if you are not trained to use one.
As I write this expandable batons article, I am assuming that you do not have a baton. You would however, like to get a baton for personal self-defense - don't do it! To be able to use a baton, be it, a stun baton, a side-handle baton or an expandable baton, properly, you MUST be well trained. There are no short cuts for this!
An expandable baton should be seen as an extension of unarmed combat training. They are not a quick fix for the average person who wants self-protection.
If you are not well trained in baton use, it can and more than likely will be taken from, and used against you. Another important point to be aware of is that there is an extremely good chance that you will not have the expandable baton with you when you need it.
So, it would be best NOT to rely on one form of defense. Become well informed, learn some basic self-defense techniques, and then learn how to use a baton as an extension of your unarmed combat skills.
Still want a baton?
Let's take a look at three types of batons:
- Stun baton
- Tonfa or side-handle baton
- Expandable baton
Stun baton
First, read the stun gun articles on this website. The information for stun guns also applies to stun batons.
Stun batons are available in different voltages and sizes. You can get 16 inch, 300,000-volt batons or 500,000-volt, 20-inch long batons. You can also get 120,000 and 150,000-volt 18-inch long stun batons. These are lower in voltage, but are supposed to have more amperage, which equals more stopping power.
You can also get stun batons with a built-in alarm and flashlight. These are 200,000 volts and 16.5-inches long.
If any of the above stun batons are of interest to you, or if you would just like to see photos of them, you can do so by visiting one, or all, of the following websites:

Tonfa or side-handle baton
Tonfa is a Japanese name for a weapon that is now more widely known as a "side-handle baton."
Traditionally, they were made from hardwood, which is a strong and fairly heavy timber. They were around 500 to 600mm (2-feet) in length and about 30mm (1-inch) round. They had a handle connected to them about 150mm (6-inches) from one end.
These days, not much has changed. They look much the same, but, although they are still making them out of wood, they are also being made out of plastic and aluminum, which is stronger and more reliable.
One or two side-handle batons can be used at the same time. Basically, they can be used for striking and blocking.

Expandable baton
If you are going to get a baton, the expandable baton is probably the best one to get, and learn to use. They collapse to a fairly small size, and can be put in a carry case and connected to your belt. This means that it can be carried in an inconspicuous manner, and accessed quickly.
They are available in 16-inch (400mm) lengths that reduce to about 6-inches (150mm). You can also get 21-inch, 26-inch and 31-inch batons.
Which expandable baton you should get will depend on your height, strength, and what you want to use it for - work or personal protection. The 16-inch baton is easier to move around and is more compact, which makes it easier to carry around. If you are a small person, you will find that a smaller expandable baton is easier to work with.
The following website has some useful information on areas to strike a person, using a baton, and techniques for doing so - grips, draws, blocks, holds:

Conclusion
A baton in the hands of a person without the skills to use it, will most likely change hands and be used against that person. It may be a better idea to work on yourself, and increase your options in other ways before you think about getting a baton for personal protection.
