To arm or not to arm, that is the question? Three good reasons why you should not rely on a weapon for self-defense. Plus three more articles to help you decide whether to carry a weapon or not.
One of the first things people think of after being attacked is to get a weapon of some kind for protection - maybe a gun. I believe that in most cases, a weapon of this kind can do you more harm than it does good.
In the first place, if you shoot someone, you may get yourself into trouble with the law. Even if it was self-defense, it has to be proven in court. You are guilty until proven innocent. Although we are lead to believe otherwise.
In the second place, it can be taken from, and used against you. That would not be much fun, at all.
In the third place, would you use it? Would you shoot to kill, and risk spending the rest of your life in jail?
A weapon can be a spur of the moment thing that you may decide to carry around with you, after a bad experience. You might carry it for a while, until it becomes more of a nuisance than a protector. Finally, you will leave it at home in the drawer.
In most countries, weapons (like guns) are illegal to carry - it is for most people living in Australia. Moreover, there is a good chance that you won't have it with you when it's needed. Something to do with Murphy’s law I think… the one time you go out without the damn thing is the one time you will need it.
A bit like in the movie "Crocodile Dundee 2" when Mick Dundee reaches for his knife only to find it’s not there. Not a very good time to figure that out. So, it’s better not to put all your eggs in one basket. It is, without doubt, better not to rely on only one, be all to end all, form of defense.
In short: A weapon can do more harm than good. A weapon can get you into trouble with the law, or it can be taken from, and used against you. There is a good chance that you won't have the weapon with you when it's needed. So at the end of the day… think carefully before you decide to rely on just one form of self-defense. Well… you’ve got it!
Below are links to three great articles (2 websites). The first two articles will probably convince you that carrying a weapon is not such a good idea. The third article is much more rounded, in that it looks at both sides of the dilemma… very informative!

"Don't feel as though you are invincible"
If the articles above don’t put you off carrying a weapon, then the next best thing you can do, is to become well educated on the subject.
The following long article by Jeffrey R. Snyder has a wealth of information, statistics, gun control history, and facts that in my opinion, are a MUST READ for anyone who is about to buy a gun.
Be warned, it’s a long article (almost a book), VERY informative, however!
