Self-defense law information is hard to find on the Internet. On this page, you will find five links to sites that have good, informative, and free articles on self-defense law. I won’t pretend to know much about self-defense law - it’s not one of my strong points – so I will send you to people who DO know. First let’s look at what I know.
If someone hits you, you can defend yourself using reasonable force. Reasonable force means that you can do just enough to stop them from attacking/hurting you. If you go any further, you will then become the attacker.
If you go any further, you will then become the attacker.
If a court sees that your first hit was enough to stun your attacker, but you decided to hit him a couple more times… you may find that YOU end up being the person on trial, and the one who goes to jail.
The words, "reasonable force" in a court of law can be twisted around to mean whatever a good lawyer wants the court to believe. This reasonable force thing makes defending yourself, more difficult than it already is. On the day, you would have done what you believed you had to do. But in court, the whole thing may get turned around, so that YOU end up looking like the bad guy!
At the end of the day, if you hit your attacker, he could sue you for pain suffered, because you defended yourself. You could be the one who ends up in jail.
Clearly, it is best to try to escape without hitting anyone. If you have read some of the articles here at Self-Defense Now, you would know that I am a pretty big believer in prevention rather than cure – avoid using force if you can.
Please note that self-defense laws may be different in the country, city, town, and suburb that you live in.
The articles you are about to read are meant to give you a broad view, as to what is happening in the world of self-defense law… and that they will.
"What can and cannot be done within the law" pretty much sums up this short and easy-to-understand article:
YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS IN THE ACT OF SELF-DEFENSE
The following article has a good story at the beginning, about a blind man. The article then goes on to explain when you can and can not use deadly force to defend yourself, a friend, a family member, or your home… plus more.
Self-Defense Law and the Martial Artist
This next article looks at cases involving battered people and self-defense. How a court of law, in the past, has reached its verdict, based on "what a reasonable person would have done." Not what THAT person could have done to defend themselves - important difference.
Self-Defense as a Mental Defense
Dog attacks! Where do you stand if a dog bites you? Can you defend yourself, and how far can you legally go?
Dog Bite Law
