1 of 70+ Articles here at SDS

Learn how thieves can get your money while you are using, and after you have used an ATM. ATMs, traveling, and thieves – how to avoid being robbed while traveling, and a great little gadget that you may find useful.Automatic Teller Machines, also known as ATMs, and a hole-in-the-wall. They make banking easy! Just put your card in, type a few numbers and out pops some money.

They are so easy to use, and convenient! The problem is, thieves see them as an easy way to get money as well. They see them as an easy way to get YOUR money. There is a good chance that they will use one of the following methods to get it.

While using an ATM

In the mind of a thief, more is better, so a thief, an enterprising thief, may wait until you type in your number. He will then sneak up behind you while you are concentrating on following the instructions on the screen.

While you are concentrating, he will either put a knife/gun to your back/throat or somehow threaten you with your life. He will then tell you to withdraw the maximum amount allowable by the bank and the machine. Or, simply knock you out and do it himself. The amount can be as much as eight hundred of your hard earned dollars (depending on your bank)!

After using an ATM

Thieves are pretty lazy so-and-sos! They may wait until you have made your withdrawal before pouncing on you. If at all possible, they will use the element of surprise to their advantage. You will be putting your money away (looking down), the thief will either grab you, push you up against a wall, wave a gun or knife in your face, and then say, "GIVE ME THE MONEY!" Most people don’t have this kind of thing happen to them everyday, so the thief will expect you to be VERY shocked by his tactic, and understandably so!

Another way a thief can get your money is to watch how much you withdraw. He will then follow you until he can rob you without being seen by a third party. Or, he will pick it out of your pocket, if you are in the right environment (busy place, lots of people).

While traveling

If you are on holidays… after you use an ATM, a thief may follow you back to your accommodation. If you are lucky, he will wait until you go out again (maybe to the beach) before breaking in and taking your handbag, wallet, camera, binoculars, money, and whatever else he can carry and sell off quickly.

Thieves also sneak in while you are asleep or watching television. How? They may work (thieve) in the area as a full-time job and have a key to your room.  I know someone who had this happen to them, so it does happen!

If you are a traveler, you could get a portable door alarm. They look like normal doorstops (a wedge), but if someone tries to open a door that the wedge is behind, it makes a loud sound that will alert you, and scare the thief away at the same time. A good idea if you travel! If you would like to take a look at one, here’s a link to a website that sells them:http://www.a2-self-defense.com/index.htmlTo prevent this kind of thing from happening to you, you need to become more aware of your surroundings when you use an ATM! Here are a few basic rules:

  • Don’t go to the same ATM, at the same time, each time.

  • If possible, don’t use an ATM at night. This is a favorite time for thieves.

  • If you really need to use an ATM at night, take a friend.

  • Try to only use ATMs that are right on a main road, or in a fairly busy area, like shopping centers.

  • As you walk towards the ATM, scan the area for suss looking scum bags.

  • Stand close to the machine when typing in your code, so no-one can see the numbers you press.

  • If you feel threatened, remove your card and go to another machine, or go back and try again later.

  • If you are about to do your shopping, remember that supermarkets allow you to withdraw money.

Conclusion

If you follow as many of the above ATM user rules as possible, you will make the transaction process a much safer one. You now know how thieves operate around ATMs, and how to make it hard for them to get your money. Use this information to your advantage…don’t be a victim!
