If you do not have attack victim scars, you do not want them! Is your life worth fighting for? Self-defense is only 10% physical. Learning self-defense will make your mum and dad feel better, and you will feel good knowing that you can protect yourself!
You have probably heard, read or seen news reports about people who have been attacked. What you are not often told during these reports, are the "details" of the attack.
Brutally beaten, repeatedly kicked, and knocked unconscious are words often used to describe an attack, but the reporters leave it up to you to fill in the details.
Why do the reporters do this? I like to think that they take into consideration the fact that children may be tuning in. The reporters spare kids the gory details - and so they should!
The television-viewing public have taken quite a liking to "reality TV" shows. Maybe one day there will be a TV show (a late night show) that does not spare us the gory details. A show that has reporters who can teach the viewer what COULD have been done to avoid or ward off an attacker in different situations. It’s the next wave in TV viewing… Info-tainment!
Mental and physical scars
Fully understanding what happens during AND for years after an attack would paint a clear picture of the mental and physical scars that an attack victim has to deal with. These scars fade over time, but never completely disappear.
If you do not have attack victim scars, you do not want them! A good reason to learn some self-defense skills is so that you do not ever have to deal with the mental and physical scars that an attack victim has to deal with for the rest of their lives. Learning to defend yourself will not guarantee you a scar free life, BUT…
It will however, dramatically increase your chances of avoiding an attack situation. If that is not possible, it may increase your ability to fight back! If you do fight back effectively, you will feel better and recover sooner. Why? Because you did not feel overwhelmingly helpless during the attack, you could do, and did do something.
Your life is worth fighting for
There have been a lot of people who have died fighting for their country. Why? Because they believed that their country was worth fighting for. Your life is your own personal country. Is your life worth fighting for… of course it is!
"But-but-but, I’m not fit, I’m not a violent person, I don’t want to hurt anyone. I’m very small you know, and I’m not as young as I used to be! Can little old me actually learn how to defend myself, you say?"
Of course you can! How do I know that you can? Because you are reading this article!
Your ability to read, guarantees that you can learn a lot about self-defense!
Self-defense is only 10% physical
Awareness, options, self-confidence and verbal defense skills are all obtainable by simply reading. Physical self-defense techniques account for only a small part of your ability to defend yourself… roughly 10%.
Short story
I sometimes say to a friend, "Why are you doing that?" She will say, "Cos I can!"
The moral of this very short story is, if you are female or male, old or young, you can do whatever you set your mind to… right?
Why learn self-defense? Because you can!
Because you may be targeted for violent crime and you can not rely on the police - they can not be everywhere. People would prefer to look the other way and not help you, so you must rely on yourself.
Your home, content and car insurance are of no use to you if you are killed by an attacker. You have probably got life insurance that will help look after your family if you die. Self-defense skills are the closest thing you can get to insure against YOUR life being taken by a low-life attacker!
You should see being able to swim, so you don’t drown, and being able to defend yourself, so you don’t become the next victim of violent crime, as VITAL life-saving skills. By learning to defend yourself, you are giving yourself "fighting chance" insurance for surviving an attack.
Besides, it will make your mum and dad feel better and you will feel good knowing that you can protect yourself!
Conclusion
Learn to defend yourself so you don’t have to deal with the mental and physical scars that an attack victim has to deal with. Also, because your life IS worth fighting for. Remember that self-defense is only 10% physical, the rest is awareness. You will feel good when you can protect yourself!
