Why you should shut your mouth if you think that you are about to be attacked. It is so important that it should be at the top of your awareness/options list.
Have you ever eaten your breakfast, lunch, and dinner through a straw? It’s not easy! First you have to chop up everything you want to eat, into tiny little pieces. Then you have to run everything you chopped, through a juicer, before you can suck it up through a straw. With a broken jaw, you won’t be able to chew, and swallowing is painful. That’s what you have to deal with if your jaw gets broken.
If you are attacked and you are hit on your chin or on the side of your jaw, your jaw may be broken. Ladies, consider this…if your jaw is broken, you will not be able to talk for around six weeks! That’s got you thinking, hasn’t it? So… how do you stop an attacker from breaking your jaw?
Shut up
At the very first sign of trouble, shut your mouth! Clench your teeth and firmly close your lips. The possibility of an injury to your jaw is greatly reduced if you close your mouth. It’s so simple and so important that it should be at the top of your awareness/options list.
Awareness: Knowing how to recognize and avoid, or deal with attack situations.
Options: Big mental list of things you can do to protect yourself.
Three more reasons to shut up
If you are hit on your jaw, chin, or mouth, and your mouth is shut, it is much harder to have your teeth broken or chipped. It is also impossible to bite your tongue when your mouth is closed.
Finally, you may have noticed that I wrote: "Clench your teeth and firmly close your lips." When you firmly close your lips, they firm up, which makes them better shock absorbers.
Hit yourself test
Try it now! Close you mouth tightly. I mean really press your teeth together. Next, firmly press your lips together so that they feel hard. Now let’s test it!
With the back of your hand, lightly tap yourself on your mouth three or four times. Also, with a closed fist this time; lightly tap yourself on your jaw, and on your chin.
Do the test again and this time relax your jaw and your lips. Feel your lips hitting on your teeth and also notice how much your jaw moves around when you hit it.
After doing the above test, it is easy to see how simply closing your mouth will help you protect yourself. It’s no miracle and it’s no guarantee, but it should help!
Remember this: If you would prefer not to eat your food through a straw for six weeks, at the first sign of trouble - shut your mouth! If you remember to do this one thing, you will greatly reduce or even stop your jaw, teeth, tongue, and lips from being damaged if you are hit.
