Choosing a Good Self-Defense Class

1 of 70+ Articles here at SDS

A rough guide and a golden rule for choosing a good self-defense class. What making the right choice will do for you? About self-defense for women classes, and how to use them to take the next step.

There are some self-defense classes which concentrate more on the traditional side of martial arts. There are some that concentrate mostly on self-defense. There are some that should be seen as a sport and not a way to learn basic self-defense skills.

In the sporty type classes, you will see a lot of high kicks, spinning, jumping, back-kicks and techniques that, although look good, are not practical for basic self-defense.

If you want to learn to defend yourself, fight someone at school, learn street fighting skills, get fit, or make new friends, ask the instructor this question:

"What percentage of your class focuses on self-defense/street fighting skills and what percentage is on the traditional side of martial arts (Katas etc.)?"

As a rough guide, the answer you get should be 80 to 90% self-defense. If you are more interested in the traditional side, the answer should be around 50 to 70% self-defense. Like I said, this is just a rough guide.

Go and watch a class. Get there ten minutes before the class starts and ask if it would be all right if you sit and watch. You should get a warm, "Yes" answer.

After the class has finished (they normally go for two hours), talk to some of the students. Find out how long they have been training, and what they like about it. If most of the students have been training there for a while (a good sign), and what they tell you matches what you want to get out of a class, ask if you can join in next time – get a couple of free lessons.

If they won’t let you try before you sign up, go somewhere else!

Another thing you should be aware of is that you can train with two different instructors who have been trained under the same style, and still get two different approaches to the style and methods of training. So…

If you don’t like the instructor, but you do like the basic training methods, try another class and instructor before you decide that the training methods are not for you.

A golden rule is to test drive a few different styles before you settle on one. Look at it like test driving a few cars before you buy. You should get two free lessons, so why not use them!

Some styles of martial arts offer a way for a student to get their black belt in a very short time (a jet-black system). If what you want is a black belt and you don’t care if you deserve it or not, look out for the styles that promote this kind of thing.

It will cost you, but it is more than possible to get your black belt in less than one year. It "should take 3 to 5 years to get your black belt if you do it the normal way.

When looking for a good self-defense class, look for one that has both female and male students. You will get to practise on people of all shapes and sizes, which will help you in a real-life situation.

A good self-defense class should help you to become skilled in self-defense techniques, increase your awareness of situations that could become violent, and give you options to help you deal with them. It will also increase you self-confidence.

There are "self-defense for women only" classes available that have been designed by women, for women. These classes are usually short term: anywhere from two to ten weeks long. They focus on issues that affect women. Issues like increasing awareness when out on their own, verbal defense skills and physical techniques to prevent rape.

For most women, a self-defense for women class is a great place to start! If you like what you are taught and how you are taught, ask the instructor if she/he knows of a self-defense class that would be a good next step.

Conclusion

To choose a good self-defense class, go to a few different classes and watch. Ask a few questions and take advantage of the two free lessons before you decide which class to join. Choose well and have fun!
