Do you want to learn to defend yourself, fight someone at school, learn street fighting skills, the traditional aspects of martial arts, improve your fitness, or make new friends? This article will help you answer an important question.
What do you want to get from a self-defense class? This is an important question! Before you can choose the right self-defense class for you, you must clearly answer the above question.
Here are just a few of the more popular reasons why people take a self-defense class:
Let’s take a quick look at each of the above reasons why people take a self-defense class. I will also share with you, some of the reasons that I started…
Learn to defend oneself
This is the reason I started going to self-defense classes.
"Why did I want to learn to defend myself?"
Good question!
Peer pressure! Yes, I was young in mind, body and at heart when two close friends decided to learn how to beat people up. Being young, I thought that if I don’t learn it as well, they might one day beat me up. So, in short, I wanted to avoid pain and reduce fear.
Fear! When it comes right down to it, the fear of being hurt is for most people, the number one reason for wanting to learn self-defense.
Fight someone at school
Probably the number one question e-mailed to the SDN website goes something like this: "There’s this kid at school who wants to beat me up. Can you tell me a move that will knock him out so he can’t hurt me?"
After going on about how fighting isn’t the answer, we’d often send them a free copy of the SDN course (no longer available). It had some good techniques in it that they would find useful. BUT, the main reason for sending the SDN course was to try to help them AVOID the need to fight. That information has helped more than one kid!
Street fighting skills
Looking back, I started learning self-defense to get street fighting skills. The classes were held twice a week and were within five minutes walk from my home. I didn’t know that there were different styles (training methods), I just lucked-out.
The class I attended just happened to focus more on street fighting than it did on the traditional aspects of martial arts, which suited me. We learned all kinds of great stuff like how to bite people’s noses off, how to tear ears off. How to put someone in a headlock in such a way that stops the blood and oxygen from flowing to their head, so the person dies… nice!
I went for the self-defense, but stayed for the street fighting skills!
Traditional aspects of martial arts
Katas, kuens, forms. These could be viewed as a kind of dance with a few or a lot of steps (picture Tai Chi and you will be on the right track). The steps used are strikes, blocks, steps, breathing and kicks.
If you just want to learn basic self-defense, the traditional aspects of martial arts are not that important. Some people LOVE it and live for it, while others can’t see any point to it. Like deciding what you want out of a self-defense class, the traditional side of it is a personal thing. Don’t knock it till you try it.
You may find that upon entering and leaving the Dojo (training hall), students will stop, face their instructor and then bow. This is a traditional thing, but can simply be seen as a sign of respect for, and thanks to, the instructor.
Fitness
A self-defense class should start with some stretching, a warm-up, and some more stretching. This process often takes up to 45-minutes. To improve your level of fitness, you need to keep your heart rate at an aerobic level, for at least 30 minutes.
Because most fights only last a few seconds, being super fit isn’t a high priority.
"Then why do they bother with fitness?"
Stretching exercises improve flexibility. Being flexible enables you to kick higher and move more fluently. Being fit will help you if you take part in tournaments. These are mostly non-contact fighting competitions – good fun!
New friends
If you are a health conscious person, you will find that most of the people, who are into martial arts, are also into clean and healthy living. Lots of water, peanuts, sultanas and sleep!
If you are not into healthy living, at the very least, by attending a self-defense class, you will meet people with the same interests as you – self-defense.
Conclusion
Once you have decided what you want out of a self-defense class, you will be able to quickly learn if a class, the instructor, and the people who attend the class fit in with what you want.
